Catherine of Aragon, and then Anne Boleyn, often hunted with the king. The queen had her own stable, where her horses were kept. It seems, though, that the king was unusually fond of the sport, so in this typical day we will imagine the queen remaining at the palace while her husband hunts.

The king would have his pick of companions, perhaps Henry Norris or some of the other gentlemen of the Privy Chamber. His closest companion was probably Charles Brandon, who married one of his sisters and became Duke of Suffolk and Lord Great Master of the Household. Other high-ranking lords who enjoyed the king’s favour might include the dashing young Earl of Surrey, cousin to Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, the Marquis of Exeter, the king’s closest kinsman, and, perhaps, a brother of the current queen. The king liked to joke and boast, matching wit with his friends. Courtiers could not rely on the king’s friendship, though. Exeter, Surrey, Norris and Anne Boleyn’s brother, Lord Rochford, all ended their days on the scaffold, victims of the king’s displeasure.

As the hunting party trotted out through the palace gates, their horses’ shod hooves clattering on the cobbles, they would be met by the hounds and their handlers. The hounds were kept in kennels outside the palace, separated by breed and function. If the quarry was a fallow buck, it would be the task of the green-liveried master of the buckhounds and his grooms to have the appropriate dogs ready for the chase.

Orders would be taken to the king’s Privy Kitchen that the king would dine away from court and suitable dishes would be prepared. The food could be taken to the park in hampers by mounted couriers. The master of the revels would have to sort out tents in case the party wanted to eat under cover. In the kitchens, the sergeant of the squillery and his officers would buff up the vessels of pewter and silver in which the food for the court would soon be served.
